David Clifton
President

David is reading for his MPhil in political theory. His particular interest in classical republicanism comes from the fact that he is really an ancient history nerd at heart, having done his undergraduate degree in the Classics. He enjoys competing in trivia competitions, discussing politics, dancing, playing tennis badly, and proudly saying “y’all” to remind everyone that he is, in fact, from Texas.

As President, David serves as the representative of all graduate students in College, and his main role is to advocate for the MCR and its members with College and University administration. He is the main point of contact for any MCR member with questions, comments, or suggestions about any facet of College life, and members are encouraged to reach out to him for any reason.

Lauren Burton
Vice President

Lauren is in her third year of a DPhil in Educational Psychology and is the Vice-President of the New College MCR. As Vice-President, Lauren is responsible for organising a fortnight of activities at the start of the year to welcome in new graduates. She also works closely with the committee in representing the MCR to College and in organising the committee elections. Therefore, if you have any questions regarding the various facilities and events on offer, please do not hesitate to contact her.

When she is not studying, Lauren can often be found at one of the many social activities in the MCR, such as formal dinners, exchanges with other colleges, and weekly bar nights. She also maintains a strong interest in choral music, which she pursues as both a long-standing member and manager of the College Choir at Christ Church.

Thomas Dixon
Secretary

Tom is a third-year DPhil Candidate in Biochemistry, and is now a seventh-year Oxford student having studied for his undergraduate degree at St Peter's College. A keen Classical musician, he has sung or played with at least 40 local or university groups during his time in Oxford, including 12 tours, 5 CD recordings, well over 100 concerts and around 1000 church services! Tom is pathologically in control of his emails, and likes admin more than is normal for any human being - this being the 7th committee that he has sat on since arriving in Oxford in 2011.

As the MCR Secretary, Tom is responsible for taking the minutes in MCR committee meetings and organising General Meetings. He is responsible for the basic admin of the MCR, but also organising the MCR election and housing ballot for the following year. When not science-ing or music-ing he is often found, beer-in-hand, in the MCR getting overly competitive at table football.

Casper Beentjes
Treasurer

Casper is currently in his second year of a DPhil in Mathematics. Maths is a pretty wide subject, so to be more specific, he works in the Wolfson Centre for Mathematical Biology trying to apply his mathematical tool-kit to interesting biology related problems such as cell sensing and biochemical reaction networks. As part of his DPhil he has to spend a fair amount of time juggling with numbers and playing around with computer code. There is however a life outside of this mathematical realm and he tries to spend some (or most) of that time with college football, squash and cycling in the countryside (an obvious hobby for somebody coming from a country with more bicycles than people!).

As your treasurer he oversees the MCR's expenditures and pays for the subscriptions, licences and all kinds of other stuff so that you don't have to worry about them! If you do, however, worry about the financial state of the MCR or have any suggestions for new subscriptions or expenditures (or savings!) do feel free to contact him at any time in the bar, via digital mail or via a good old fashioned hand-written letter.

Jakub Stefaniak
Social Secretary

Jakub (Jack) is currently doing a PhD in Systems Approaches in Biomedical Sciences, currently working towards creating new and interesting compounds to fight cancer. He spends his days making new drugs and nights relentlessly testing them on cells, hoping to one day make a significant breakthrough that could change the world. In his spare time, Jack is an avid sportsperson, boxer, coder and an armchair economist. He’s also a health-nut, always snacking on chia seeds and blueberries.

Jack is one of the two MCR Social Secretaries. All sorts of fun events, like bops, parties, second desserts, exchange dinners are within his domain. You can usually find him in the MCR bar, at the gym, or in his room in house 9.

Lorenzo Venturini
Social Secretary

Lorenzo is in the first year of a DPhil in Biomedical Imaging, and spends his days studying pictures and searching for ways to make them look better. As one of the three MCR social secretaries, his job is to organise exchange dinners, bops and parties for all the graduate students of New College.

Lorenzo can reliably be found at MCR events, especially those which involve free food and drink. He actually enjoys rowing, and memorises useless trivia in his spare time to hone his pub quiz skills. His primary motivation in life is the consumption of large quantities of cheese.

Claire Wright
Welfare Officer

Claire is currently in her first year of the MPhil in Comparative Social Policy and her independent research focuses specifically on NGO-government relations with respect to domestic violence response services in indigenous communities. Claire also enjoys playing squash, football, and tennis for New College and is currently a member of Oxford's Microfinance Initiative, completing a Nepali-based project.

As your welfare officer, Claire works to provide MCR programming to encourage well-being and support systems across the MCR. Additionally, Claire, along with the MCR team of peer supporters, is available to chat confidentially with students one-on-one. Please feel free to reach out to Claire if you ever want to chat, have a fun idea for a welfare MCR event, or need any additional information about New College student services.

Emma Riley
House Officer

Emma is studying for an DPhil in Economics where she focuses on financial services in Sub-Saharan Africa. When she's not visiting Kenya she's helping to keep the MCR a pleasant environment for all your social activities, from bar nights to just relaxing and watching TV. Feel free to contact her if you have any requests for making the MCR your home away from home, whether suggestions for tea flavours or to let her know the coffee machine isn’t working!

Originally from Oxford, Emma enjoys taking advantage of the numerous activities the city has to offer, from punting to bops to a night at the pub with friends. Emma is a long practising yogi and enjoys travelling to far off locations whenever her budget allows it.

Imogen Stead
Arts and Culture

As Arts and Culture rep, I keep the MCR informed of various arts and culture related events happening around the university and run subsidised trips to performances; my job is essentially to promote the huge variety of art and culture that Oxford has to offer to its student body around the MCR. I also occasionally indulge my passion for wine and cheese by running wine and/or cheese themed events.

Outside of the committee, I continue to be artsy and cultured by playing the bassoon in university orchestras, producing plays and (unfortunately) supporting Arsenal Football Club. When not analysing ancient Greek literature in a library, I am more often than not to be found on the hockey pitch or consuming large amounts of cheese.

Priyanka Panchal
Equality and Diversity Officer

Priyanka is in her second year of a DPhil in Psychiatry, investigating mood instability and its cognitive and neural underpinnings in bipolar disorder and depression. When she is not studying in the library or splitting her time between the Warneford and JR hospitals, you can usually find her baking or at one of the MCR’s many social events! As a peer supporter, she is also available to chat confidentially and support students with any matters of concern.

As Equality and Diversity officer, Priyanka oversees and promotes the MCR’s E&D activities and works alongside the Women’s, LGBTQ+, and Welfare officers. She also works to advance access and outreach for the graduate community (for example, through the New: Over the Wall Facebook page), as well as collaborate with college in order to promote disability access and provisions across the college site.

Aaron Hundle
Sports Representative

I am currently in my fourth year of study for the Clinical Medicine course. I love to get involved in a wide range of sports at all levels - from training with the university squash second team (OUSRC Squirrels), to casually playing medic football and competing in our college’s croquet tournament! I also really enjoy being captain of the squash team here at New College. As the MCR Sports Rep my job is to make sure that you have everything you need for your college sporting endeavours. This means that I’m responsible for maintaining our sports equipment / facilities and keeping you informed of any college or university sporting opportunities. I’m also responsible for organizing MCR sports teams, liaising with the captains of our JCR teams (that are open to both undergraduate and graduate students) and arranging outings to sporting events that you might be interested in. So, if you’re keen to start up or join a team, or would like to go to see a match, feel free to contact me.

Katie Heath
Bar Representative

I’m Katie, a first year DPhil in Bioscience. As your first year rep my job is to organise relaxing social events in our MCR for you all to enjoy. These include movie nights (for which I’m open to film suggestions!), and plenty of other fun events around the MCR.

I can usually be found in my second home in the MCR bar, where I am also your bar rep. This involves ordering in all our drinks, running the bar, allocating bar shift volunteers and all other bar-related activities. If you’d like to work as a bar shift volunteer or have suggestions for things we can get in stock then get in touch. I enjoy playing football among plenty of other sports. I also dabble in writing a DPhil from time to time.
